Most of us have heard of collagen and know it is crucial for health and beauty. But what is biostimulation? In essence, it is the revitalisation of the skin by triggering new collagen production.
Collagen-stimulating processes in the body depend on many factors. How can we boost this natural beauty mechanism? Dr Svitlana Larkina explains.
Dr Larkina has more than 30 years of experience in aesthetic medicine. She is the medical director of an aesthetic centre in Ukraine and an expert in intensive cosmetology and anti-ageing therapies. She also holds an MD degree and is a certified trainer for several medical companies.
Recently, she was an invited speaker at the international symposium Stimulating Natural Beauty in Sofia, where she discussed collagen-stimulation pathways and ways to improve collagen quality.
How can modern aesthetic medicine help us preserve natural beauty?
I am 55, and I personally use every available tool of aesthetic medicine — of course, I share this experience with my patients. Today we have amazing possibilities, yet it is vital to understand how to combine different procedures correctly. It is not just marketing. Although I represent certain brands, I am a physician first.
Health, lifestyle, and physical activity are essential; the next step is consulting qualified medical professionals who can build an individual treatment plan. Creating a unique road map — for the face, the body, and even the whole life — is crucial. Step by step, without rushing.
For my patients, I develop a year-long plan, explaining that they will improve not only outwardly but also internally. Sometimes that means changing habits or even one’s diet.
Do you use collagen stimulators in your practice?
Yes. In our clinic, we work with various collagen stimulators — both injectable and device-based. Everything depends on the patient. We often start with amino acids and peptides, and introduce stimulators later.
Which superfoods do you recommend?
I always advise a protein-rich diet. If a patient is vegan, I recommend adding amino-acid supplements. I often suggest a blood test for amino-acid profiling and a visit to a nutritionist. Physical activity is also essential.
Yet we each have different genetics, hormonal status, chronic conditions, and digestive issues. Without proper absorption, even the best food will not work. Check your health first; if everything is fine, you can begin the procedures.
At what age do you recommend biostimulation?
After 25. Before that, the body shows no real signs of ageing.
What is your stance on sugar?
I love chocolate — I sometimes eat a small piece with my morning tea or coffee. Still, I know that glycation is harmful to collagen. I do not recommend much sugar, though a good mood is even more important.
Which amino acids are most important for the skin?
Glycine, lysine, and proline. Iron — especially the ferrous (divalent form) and ferritin; without them, collagen cannot be synthesised. Vitamin C is mandatory. These five substances should be consumed daily to support collagen synthesis.
What are your favourite skincare products?
Vitamin C serum, retinol, a toner to close pores and restore pH, a day and a night cream, and an eye-area cream. That is at least five products for daily care.
